About The Artist
Ayano Takami is a fashion designer based in New York.
She believes in designing for culturally open minded, intellectually curious, and free-spirited women. Her creation is based on her own belief in the existence of the bonds beyond the material world – beyond physical body, time and place. An uplifting spirit and blissful conjunction in her design is her expression of the brilliance of life and beautifully chaotic world that we live in today.
WHY HAS SHE COME TO HOLD THAT BELIEF, AND WHY DID SHE DECIDE TO BECOME AN ARTIST? WHY FASHION?
Since Ayano was a very little girl, she knew how it feels to be unconditionally loved, and how it feels to lose a loved one. Unforgettable happiness and heartbreak firmly shaped her mentality. Through her family, she has come to learn and know that nothing is more painful in life to lose loved ones, but there is certainly a bond existing beyond the material world. She believes that if there is a peace even in the greatest pain of one’s life, it is more important to keep going in that life rather than dwelling on sorrow. Life is a miracle, and anything is possible if you don’t give up. She is convinced to communicate this message through fashion because fashion inspires, encourages and moves people, and it is what she feels most passionate about.
WHAT DOES SHE VALUE IN HER DESIGN?
Ayano values being timeless, ageless and effortless. She finds these values essential to her design as she focuses on themes such as life and death, time, journey, unconsciousness, memory and human emotion. These values are fundamental especially because she emphasizes on the importance of being mindful of the world we live in; the invisible exists beyond the visible. It is that mysterious, but natural and beautiful world that we are born to.
HOW DOES SHE TRANSLATE SUCH INTANGIBLE THEMES IN A TANGIBLE FORM OF FASHION?
Ayano starts her design process with meticulous research on a theme or concept as any dots and pieces of information and inspiration can perform a key role in the outcome. She often takes a psychological approach in her design. For example, if she is inspired by an artwork, she goes on to research not just about the artist, but how he lived, what view he was holding, how he was feeling at that moment of creation and why, and so on.
As her interests are basically intangible matters, a choice of a material is crucial in her design. She designs and crafts her own material, and makes sure its texture and color represent right feeling of the concept as well as her perspective. She weaves, dyes, screen prints, and heat transfers fabric to create the best medium that can convey her message. She also likes to experiment with patterning and draping manipulations to create a fresh and beautiful silhouette.
WHAT IS HER MISSION AS A DESINGER, AND HOW DOES SHE ACHIEVE IT?
As a designer, Ayano feels committed to create fashion which encourage women with dreams, who. want to live every day like a special day. As the world requires a woman to play multiple roles, Ayano hopes to give her confidence and remind her that anything is possible. With that mission, she continues her endeavors in the creative world.
